Pele, Protector of Paradise

Who is Pele?

In ancient Hawaiian chants, the mythical goddess Pele is described as “She-Who-Shapes-The-Sacred-Land.” To this day, Pele is sculpting her beloved tropical paradise. Dwelling in the craters of the Big Island's Kilauea Volcano, she has been sending ribbons of fiery lava down the mountainside and adding new land around the Big Island’s southeastern shore continuously since 1983. The Big Island is the only place on earth where new land is currently forming.

It’s easy to see why Pele is very much a part of modern Big Island culture. She is credited with giving inspiration to the island’s many art communities, and she invokes cultural reverence via hula dancing and music. It’s customary for Big Island visitors to pay their respects to Pele.
